Balligavi a town in Shkaripur taluk of Shimoga Dist is known for its ancient monuments. Its ancient names are Dakshina Kedara,Valliggame and Valligrame. It is also famous as the birth place of the great Veerashaiva saint ans is closely associated with Vachanas namely poetess Akka Mahadevi who was born in village called Udugani near by Balligavi and she was a contemporary of Allama Prabhu and Lord Basaveswara ,and Lord Basaveswara is known for the founder of the Vachana Sahitya and the Veerashaiva movement. Balligavi is also the birth place of Shantala Devi, queen of Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana . Balligavi is located nearly 72 km from Shimoga city and appro. 12 km from Shikaripur.
There is a story that Pandavas arrived here while on their way from Vanavasa and they installed the Panchalinga. The Badami Chalukya inscription can found in Balligavi .
